Meet Sophia Dawson

Sophia Dawson, BA (Hons), MA (Hons), PGDipPsychPrac

Child & Adolescent Psychologist (registered - general scope)

Sophia is a warm and vibrant Psychologist experienced in working with adults and youth across a variety of settings, explaining her diversity of skills. She has experience as a Behavioural Therapist, working with children with Autism, developing individualised therapeutic programs in schools and home. Sophie then moved to Forensics, working for the Department of Corrections, supporting prisoners, providing assessments and developing their rehabilitation and reintegration programs. In another role at Corrections, she provided therapeutic interventions with prisoners also experiencing mental health difficulties.

In more recent years, Sophia moved to the UK and began working with youth. She has since specialised in working with children and adolescents in the UK, for the South London and Maudsley Trust, NHS, and found her calling. Now having worked with children, adolescents and families in hospital and in the community with a variety of challenges Sophia has begun to consolidate on her earlier Behaviour Therapist experience and love for young people and families. Her positions in the UK have allowed her to train further in some of the world's best hospitals and as such she has developed a wealth of experience second to none by NZ standards.

Sophia has developed countless individualised therapeutic programs which have supported the children, adolescents and families she has worked with to positive and lasting change. Second to that, she has enjoyed every minute and returned home to NZ with the intent to continue her work with youth, while also being closer to family during this international pandemic.

Sophia is experienced working with young people with a wide range of mental health concerns, and working within Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) frameworks. She has run therapeutic groups for adolescents with eating disorders, anxiety and depression. Most of all however, Sophia is warm, bubbly, approachable and passionate about supporting our young people to living healthy and happy lives.
