Understanding OCD in Children and Teens

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) involves unwanted, intrusive thoughts, images or urges (obsessions) that cause distress, and repetitive behaviours or mental rituals (compulsions) carried out to try to reduce that distress or prevent something bad from happening.

Who this is for

We work with children, teens and young adults experiencing OCD symptoms of any severity, including those who haven't yet had a formal diagnosis but are noticing intrusive thoughts, rituals, or avoidance getting in the way of daily life.

What to expect

Assessment looks at the nature, triggers and severity of obsessions and compulsions. Therapy for OCD is typically Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), often incorporating exposure and response prevention - gradually and safely facing feared thoughts or situations without carrying out the compulsion, so the anxiety naturally reduces over time.

Where OCD is significantly impacting daily functioning, a Psychiatric Medication Consultation can also be discussed alongside therapy.
